William Green Huffman, the son of William Huffman and Milly Lamb, was born about 1839, probably in Randolph County, Alabama, his parent's location in the 1840 census.[1] Family legend says he preferred "Green," and that is the name by which he was enumerated in census records.
Based on the birth date of their first known child, Green and Eliza Raley were married before 1858, and probably in Choctaw County, Mississippi.
In the 1840 census Green is probably the male child (under 5) in the household of William Huffman (age 20-29) in Randolph County, Alabama.[1] Also in the household are his mother (age 20-29) and another female (under 5), probably his sister, Martha.
In the 1850 census Green (age 11) was in the household of his grandparents, Nicholas Lamb and Temperance Jones, in Choctaw County, Mississippi.[2] The census taker apparently assumed that Nicholas's last name applied to everyone in the household. Thus, except for Temperance, everyone else's last name was incorrectly recorded. The correct enumeration of the household should have been: Nicholas Lamb (age 75) and Timpey Lamb (age 70), Martha (Lamb) McClenden (age 40) and her daughter Albany Green McClenden (age 15), Green Huffman (age 11) and his brother Joshua Huffman (age 5 months, born in Albama). Furthermore, Green's other siblings, Martha (age 11), Tempary (age 8), and John (age 6), are in the nearby household of their uncle, Joshua Lamb.[3]
These two 1850 census records support the scenario that Green's mother, Milly (Lamb) Huffman had recently died, probably in Alabama and perhaps due to complications in the birth of Joshua (born 20 July 1849 in Alabama). His father, William Huffman, was elsewhere, perhaps back in Alabama wrapping up his family's affairs there in anticipation of his move to Mississippi. The family's children had been sent ahead and were in the care of family that had previously moved from Alabama to Mississippi.
In any event, the family is back together again by 1860. In that census, Green's father, William Huffman (age 44), and Green's four siblings mentioned above, are living in Township 21, Choctaw County, Mississippi.[4] Green (age 21) and his wife Eliza Raley (age 18) are married and living nearby.[5]
The Civil War was the next calamity to befall this family, and Green volunteered on 4 May 1861 at Bellefontaine, Choctaw County, Mississippi, and was mustered in at Corinth, Mississippi on 18 August 1861.[6][7] He served as a private in the Mississippi 15th Infantry Regiment, the "Choctaw Greys."
He survived the Civil War as his record shows that he mustered out as a private, the same rank mustered in. However, no other record for Green has been found to date. He is missing from the 1870 census although he and Eliza apparently had two more children after that date.
Green and Eliza (Raley) Huffman had the following children:
