Biography

Stanley was born 28 Jun 1920 in Gaston County, North Carolina, the eldest son and child of George Huffstetler and Jennie Carpenter.[1]

Harold was nine years old when the census enumerator, Joel Wray, found Harold's family in the Acme Mill Village in North Belmont. Harold had been to school during the census year, along with his two younger brothers. His father was working in a textile mill to support his family.[2]

By 1940, there were three in the family working in the mill, Harold, his brother Zane, and their father. They were living in North Belmont, possibly in the same house as 1930 (and certainly the same as 1935). Harold had worked 50 of the previous 52 weeks, earning $750 as a lap-machine operator.[3]

Stanley was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He first enlisted in the National Guard on 16 Sep 1940 in Gastonia, North Carolina.[4]

Stanley enlisted a second time on 15 Mar 1944 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a clerk/typist and had no overseas service.[5]

His separation papers indicate that Stanley was a groceries sales clerk at enlistment and had black hair and blue eyes, was 6' 2 3/4" in height and weighed 220 pounds. He received the American Theater Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, a Meritorious Unit Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Stanley was a high school graduate. He received $8.10 for travel money in addition to his separation pay of $161.[6]

In between enlistments, Stanley married Kate Wilson Presley on 24 Nov 1944 by the Rev E. J. Caldwell, a Missionary Baptist Minister, at the Centerview Baptist Church Parsonage in South Point Township, Gaston County. Witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Haynie, Mrs. E. J. Caldwell (the wife of the minister), and Mrs. Harry B. Rowe, all of Belmont, North Carolina.[7]

Stanley was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Gastonia, deacon, taught Sunday school for 50 years.

Stanley died on 27 Jun 2001 in Gaston County and was buried at the Gaston Memorial Park In Gastonia, Gaston County.[8]
