Barney was born on 25 October 1889 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.[1] He was the son of of Walter Hughes and Mollie Dyer.[2]
He married Mary Etta Farrell on 21 December 1916 in Hamilton County, Tennessee.[3] They were married by J. M. Mason, minister.[4]
He worked as a paper ruler for printing companies.[5][6] He later worked as a sales manager for a binding and stationery company.[7][8]
Barney died on 10 November 1968 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.[9]
