Research Notes

  1. Is this Caleb Hughes actually the son of David Hughs and Martha Lewis?
    1. It is established that David and Martha had a son named Caleb who was born in 1703.
    2. According to this profile their son, Caleb, lived until 1799. He would have been 96 years of age at his death. Does a source exist confirming his date of death and he was the same Caleb born to David and Martha?
  2. According to this profile Caleb was married to Mary Jones.
    1. Does a source exist to confirm the name of Caleb's wife? His marriage is confirmed in the Quaker Meeting Minutes but they do not contain the name of his wife, only he married outside the Society of Friends.
  3. There were at least two or more Caleb Hughes residing in South Carolina at the same time and two of them died in 1799 leaving a Will. Neither of which appear to be Caleb Hughes on this profile.
    1. Caleb Hughes of Indian Fields, Edisto River died before 3 Jan 1799 when his will was proved in court. His wife, Mary, qualified as executor. His children were: Jonathan, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Mary and Ann. The information for his son, Thomas, is different from that of the son, Thomas, attached to this profile.
    2. Another Caleb Hughes of District of Charleston in South Carolina died between 19 Feb 1799 and 5 Apr 1799, when his will was proved in court. His wife was named Mary and his children were: Hanah, Dianah and David Isaac S. Hughes. His will was witnessed by Margaret Rumph and Margaret Byrd and James Preston Applebry qualified as executor.[3] This Will is not the same Caleb Hughes reflected on this profile.
  4. A 1790 census record is commonly associated with this Caleb Hughes. Confirmation is required to confirm this is the correct Caleb for that record.
