Barnett "Barney" Hughes was born in Virginia about 1824. He was shown working as a blacksmith in 1850 in Campbell County, Virginia.
Barney married Margaret Bailey on November 2, 1853 in Virginia, and they had at least two children; daughters Sarah Rebecca on August 11, 1854 in Appomattox County, and Margaret Jane on September 2, 1860. Barnett Hughes was part of the approximate 25,000 forces at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, when General Lee signed the surrender documents inside the McLean House.
There is a record of daughter Sarah Rebecca marrying James John Stinnett on December 19, 1877 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
