Biography

Charles Hughes was born in Lancashire, England.

Charles Miller Hughes (1858-1949) was born in Liverpool on the 27th September 1858. [1] He was the son of a sailmaker, Charles Miller Hughes and Angelina Baines. [2]

He was christened on the 14th August 1859 at St James' church in Toxteth Park, Liverpool at which time the family lived on Morpeth Street, [3] but by 1861 they had moved onto Wood Street South in Toxteth Park. [4]

His father died in 1868 and following his mother's remarriage to Robert Thomas, the family moved into his house named "Robina Cottage" on Roper Street, Toxteth Park. In the 1871 census all Angelina's children were incorrectly given the "Thomas" surname. [5]

He married Mary Ann Foster at St Silas' church in Toxteth Park on the 16th September 1878 [6] [7]

and they started their family on Upper Park Street with Robina Angelina Alice (1880) [8] before moving to Carlton Hill, Toxteth Park when he was shown as a plasterer. [9]

They moved out of the city before 1891 moving to Cavendish Street, Crosby. He was described as a plasterer and there had been several further additions to the family including Edmund Miller (1881), Rudolph Augustus (1882), Miriam Adelaide (1885), Charles Miller (1887), Irene Foster (1890). [10] Gladys Wolfe (1892) would arrive the following year then Noel Wolfe (1894) to complete the family.

In 1901 they were living on Victoria Road in Great Crosby and he was described as a building material merchant [11] [12] but he was able to retire and moved around 1910 down to Paignton, Devon taking most of the family with him.

His wife, Mary Ann, died there in 1924 [16] and he remarried later that year to a widow Ethel Mary Hockmeyer (nee Hall), [17] and they lived on Belle Vue Road until 1931 [18] after which they moved to Causeway in nearby Dartington. [1] [19]

After the death of his second wife in 1947 [20] he moved back north.

He died on the 23rd April 1949 at Glyn Avenue, Bromborough. [21] [22]
