Born to parents John Hughes and his wife Selina Taylor Hughes nee Bryant, Laurie Kathleen Hughes birth year was 1888. Laurie grew up in Pahiatua, where her father was one of the first settlers (was the second person living there).

Laurie married Kenneth Groves in 1914.

Laurie Groves died in 1988 having lived a hundred years.
