Biography
William P. Hughes was born April 16, 1843. He was son of John M. Hughes and Mary (Braisted) Hughes. [1]
In 1870, he was in the household of his parents on Staten Island. [2] About 1873, he married Melissa Hendrix who died in 1875.
About 1883, he married Mary E. Cadmus of Bayonne. They settled in the family homestead in Bloomfield. The following was found in “Staten Island and its people: a history, 1609-1929.”
William P. Hughes, like his father, was an oysterman, and devoted to the development of his farm lands and aided in the community. He married Mary E. Cadmus of Bayonne, who was born in that city, June 10, 1861. They resided in the family homestead in Bloomfield, the death of Mrs. Hughes occurring December 7, 1888 and her husband surviving her until November 24, 1924. Both are buried in Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery. They were the parents of two children: 1. John W. Hughes, [born January 24, 1884] 2. Mary M., born June 16, 1886, who lives at the family home. [3]
He is buried in Asbury Methodist Cemetery, new Springville, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York. [4]
