Biography

Son of Dr. Samuel S. Hughes and wife Jennie.

Clare was employed at age 22 as an "assistant farmer" in the Nuyaka Mission School in Oklahoma Territory. John Miles Robe, his future wife's brother, was the school superintendent.

Clare married Mary Belle Robe about 1903. Their first child was born in Indian Territory about 1904. By 1906 the family had moved to Maryland.

Clare lived the rest of his life in Maryland, where he was employed by the U. S. Maritime Commission.

1900 Census: Clare R Hughs, age 22 b MO, was an "assistant farmer" on the staff of the Nuyaka Mission School of which John Miles Robe was superintendent, in the Creek Nation, Oklahoma Indian Territory. ^[2]
