Research Notes

Information on imported profile:

Daniel Hughes b: abt. 1767 NC d: abt 1851 Floyd Co. KY md: Susanna Tyree (believe to be 2nd or 3rd wife) Children of Daniel Hughes listed on 1810 Russell Co. VA Tax List: Toliver, James, Elizabeth, Daniel Jr., John, Gabriel, Catherine

Angelee,
I also belong to Appalachian Heritage and saw your post re: Daniel Hughes.
I am a genealogy researcher, hoping to become certified soon. I descend from the Lesters. Since I am researching Daniel for someone else I am copying below what I sent him.
I was also doing Farmer research for someone else. I had gone to a Native American gathering here in KY. A woman came up to me and told me how much I look like her great-grandmother who was a Farmer and who, like me, was white and Cherokee. I will have to find those notes. The name Kizziah seems familer.

Doug,
I have been poking around some re: Daniel Hughes. You give him as b. 1768 NC, d. 1851 Floyd Co, KY. Every reference I have found verifys this. At World Connect he is given as married to Sarah Tyree.; children...Walter, Toliver, James, John, Elizabeth, Gabriel, Catherine (several are listed as born Russell Co, VA)
The name is spelled Hughes and Hughs.
Daniel is on the Russell Co, VA census 1830, 1840
1810 census Washington Co, Va lists Daniel, Isaac, James, Nimrod.
Isaac and Nimrod appear to be sons of Elias Hughes b.1757 VA married Jane Sleeth. There is quite a bit of info about Elias. He left VA around 1798 with his nephew John Ratliff and families and became some of the first settlers in Licking Co, OH.
Because they were in Washington Co with a Daniel this may indicate a family relationship.
The name Ratliff keeps coming up but I don't know how your Ratliff line might tie in.
At Rootsweb, Hughes surname, there are several posts. One says
Daniel came to Russell Co early 1800's, then they migrated to Letcher Co, KY. There are also references to Hughes having Cherokee ancestry.
If Daniel was born NC this seems likely.
Another post says Hardy Hughes b. 1794 d. Wayne Co, KY, was
Daniel's brother, and also John, William. Hardy is listed on the 1860 Wayne Co census, age 70, b. NC
At USGEN, Morgan Co, KY, marriages listed for Daniel's children mid-1800's.
1843 tax list Letcher Co Daniel, James, Toliver (sons?) on Troublesome Creek, Gabriel on Rockhouse
1850 Letcher Co census many Hughs; all seem to be Daniel's descendents. No reference found to who Daniel's parents were.
I think Elias b. 1757 may be a good lead.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:
