Walter was born in 1878. He was the son of James Hughes and Matilda McCallum. He passed away in 1961. He is buried in the North Rockhampton Cemetery, Queensland. [1]
Wedding HUGHES— BOWEN At the Albert-street Methodist Church on December 23 the marriage was solemnised of Mr. Walter James Hughes, only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Hughes, of Caboolture, and Miss Polly Bowen, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Bowen, Glass House Mountains. Rev. H. M. Wheller officiated.
The bride, who was given away by her father, was frocked in ivory georgette made with frills on the skirt and a flared flounce at hem, and with an Eton jacket. Her veil was of Brussels net worn in cap fashion; she carried a bouquet of white daisies and carnations. The bridesmaids, Misses O. J. Hughes, sister of the bridegroom, and N. J. Bowen, sister of the bride, were frocked in pink and blue crepe de Chine respectively, and carried bouquets of pink roses. Mr. G. Bowen, brother of the bride, was best man. The wedding breakfast was held at the Cafe Majestic. The mother of the bride wore a frock of navy marocain with beige trimming, and hat to tone. Later Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hughes left for Coolangatta on their honeymoon. [2]
