John was born in 1846. He was the son of William Hughes and Elizabeth Butler. In 1870 he was still living at home helping to work the farm.[1] Sometime before June 1880 he was injured when a horse fell on him while jumping a fence. The 1880 census indicates he is an invalid with paralysis.[2] In later years he was further crippled by a stroke. He passed away in 1923 from pneumonia.[3] He never married.
