Biography

Margaret Hughes was born in 1816 and baptised on 15 September that year in Pentraeth Parish Church a daughter of William Hughes and his wife Mary. [1] [2] Margaret is 25 at her marriage in 1841 and living at the family home called Gors in Pentraeth. Her father is a labourer on the marriage record, but a weaver on the 1841 and subsequent census records. Margaret is there with her parents and her husband, Robert. [3]. (see research note)

Marriage

Margaret married Robert Hughes (abt.1820-1880), they were both Welsh speakers. [4] They were married at the Pentraeth Parish Church on 31 May 1841. On the wedding record Margaret is shown as a daughter of William Hughes (bef.1790-aft.1861), and living in Gors, Pentraeth. Robert is shown as a labourer, the son of John Hughes (abt.1790-) also a labourer. Robert is shown as living at Tan y (Tign?) in Llangoed. [5]

Children

Robert and Margaret's children included:

  1. Mary Hughes (1844-) age 7 on 1851 census [6];
  2. John Hughes baptised on 20 Sep 1846 in Penmon, living at Bryn Caim [7] He passed away aged three in 1849. [8]
  3. Ann Hughes (abt.1848-) baptised on 6 Feb 1848 in Penmon, living at Bryn Caim [9];
  4. Margaret (Hughes) Jones (abt.1850-1922) baptised 14 April 1850 in Penmon, living at Bryn Caim [10];
  5. Elizabeth Hughes (bef.1852-) baptised on 8 Feb 1852 in Penmon at Bryn Caim [11] ;
  6. John Hughes (1854-1909) baptised on 26 Feb 1854 in Penmon at Bryn Caim; [12]
  7. Ellin (or Ellen) Ellin Hughes (abt.1857-aft.1881) baptised on 7 June 1857 in Penmon, living at Bryn Caim. [13]

Life Story

The 1841 census record for Gors, Pentraeth shows Robert and Margaret with William Hughes (bef.1790-aft.1861) (Head of house and a weaver) and his wife, Mary Hughes and two other children, William and Elianor. [14]

By 1871, they were living at Bryn Caim, a small hamlet a couple of miles west (inland) from Penmon and where most of their children were born. This is shown on census returns e.g., in 1871. [15][16][17]

Death

Robert died on 3 March 1880 and Margaret in 1893, both in Penmon (at Bryn Caim). They were buried in St Seiriol's Church, Penmon on 6 March 1880.

There is a memorial inscription (in Welsh) to them in the churchyard. [18][19] It reads: Er cof am Robert Hughes Bryn Caim, Penmon yr hwn a fu farw Marwth 3ydd 1880 yn, 60, mlywdd oed. Margaret anwyl wraig y dwededig Robert Hughes y hon a fu farw Rhagfyr 26ain 1893 yn 77 mlwydd oed.

This translates in to English as: In loving memory of Robert Hughes Bryn Caim, Penmon who died March 3rd 1880 aged 60 years. Also Margaret dear wife of the said Robert Hughes who died December 26th 1893 aged 77 years.

A probate record listed in 1881 for Robert Hughes deceased 6.3.1880, lately of Nant granted to executrix Ann Jones (daughter?) wife of Griffith Jones of Nant, Llangelynin. [20] (it states his death as 6 March, but that was the burial date.)

Research Notes

DNA: Margaret's 2 x great grandson and her sister, Elizabeth's 2 x great grandsons are 4th cousins and have been linked to each other by an autosomal AncestryDNA test, they are sharing 38cM across 6 segments. The cousins most recent common ancestor is William Hughes (1788-1869) the father of Margaret and Elizabeth.
