Mary Hughes was born in 1818. She is the daughter of Mathew Hughes and Mary Small. She passed away in 1902. Burial: Place: Ulmarra, NSW, Australia [1]
Northern Star (Lismore, NSW : 1876 - 1954), Wednesday 30 April 1902. DEATH OF MRS MARY SMALL. — Clarence papers notify the death last Wednesday of Mrs. Mary Small, widow of the late Mr. Thomas Small, formerly of Alfred Bank, Ulmarra. Deceased was 84 years of age, and one of the oldest residents of the Clarence. Her death had been accelerated, it is believed, by a fall she recently sustained.
Mrs. Small had resided on the Clarence for upwards of 60 years, and all early settlers will remember her gratefully for many acts of kindness experienced at her hands, as also from her husband, the late Mr. Thomas Small.
Before coming to reside at Ulmarra she was for a number of years on their station. Deceased was an enthusiastic worker in the cause of the Anglican Church at Ulmarra, and it was in a measure largely due to her and her husband that the church was built there and services maintained. Mr. Small donated the site of the first sugar mill erected by a company at Ulmarra named the Belmore, from the fact of it was opened by Earl Belmore. [2]
