John was born in 1775. He was possibly the son of Benjamin Hughes and his wife Rachel Jones.
John died in 1815 and was buried at Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove.[1]
John's parentage is uncertain. The father linked here married in 1771 and named son John in his will, indicating that John was the eldest son. This fits reasonably well with John's birth in 1775. The location of Benjamin and John specifically in Pittsgrove Township for their whole lives fits well, as does the fact that John named his second son Benjamin.
The first son is named Henry, and the witnesses to his will were Henry Candle, Daniel Hires (son-in-law of Henry), and Elizabeth Candle. One wonders if John's first son were named in honor of this Henry. But Henry did not name any of John's children in his will, so it does not seem that Henry was John's father-in-law.
