"Regarding the large Hughes family of Cae Du, Bryneglwys, I have written about them in my book 'Pobol sy'n Cyfri'. It was a clever family.
According to the Bryneglwys Sion Chapel Records Humphrey Hughes and his family moved from Plas Adda, Corwen in May 1831 to Cae Du, Bryneglwys although the Rev William Williams in his 'History of the Calvinists in East Merioneth' says that it was 1827. Humphrey and his wife Jane had 7 sons and one daughter.
They were:
1. David (Reverend) who married Lydia Roberts (1823-1901). They had 11 children. Thomas 1844-1902 (he was a Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths); David 1845 (went to USA and was known as 'Ialydd' and had a 1000 acre ranch); Maggie Eliza; John Elias (Rev) 1849-1910 who lost one of his sons in World War 1); Humphrey 1847 (went to USA); Robert Evan (went to the USA); James 1855-1902 married Kate Ellen Griffiths; Job Medwyn (a Dr in Ruthin) married Margaret Rhydderch, their son Dr Trevor married Enid grand-daughter of the poet Ceiriog; William Gladstone (married Elizabeth Bryn Williams of Canonbury, London); Lydia and Jane Anne. In an article in the magazine 'Cymru' in 1895 a certain John Owen wrote a diary and mentioned that in St Louis he had met two of Rev David Hughes' sons, one of them being married. He reported that they both had comfortable means and that the eldest was moving to Kansas having acquired some land on the Rev R Wake's settlement.
2. Humphrey who lived at Rhos Isa, Llandegla and married Eleanor Jones of Rhosddigre They had 10 children. One of their great grandchildren is Elfyn Pritchard, the writer
3. William who lived at Berth, Pentrecelyn and married Elizabeth Salisbury of Bryntangor, Bryneglwys and had at least 7 children
4. Robert who married Winifred Evans and had a son Edgar and lived in Corwen
5. Griffith
6. Thomas who lived at Pantglas Uchaf, Llanynys parish and married Sidney Smith and had at least 5 children. Many many of their descendants are in the Ruthin area.
7. Margaret
8. John the druggist who lived at Llan Isa, Bryneglwys. His third wife Elinor was a native of Holyhead and was a descendant of the Jacobites who had to flee Scotland during the rebellions. Because of their loyalty to James Stuart the Old Pretender William Chambers of Causney Head and his brother John fled for their lives in the middle of the night in a small boat and eventually arrived in Porthdinllaen on the Llyn Peninsula and then over to Anglesey. They changed their names. John Hughes had numerous children and one of them (son of Elinor) was named Percy Gladstone. He became a minister and emigrated to New Zealand. This information was given me by his daughter Megan Barton who lives in NZ and is in her 90s."
