A search of Birth Registration indexes indicates that James's birth may have been registered in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. In 1867 there were 2 birth registrations for James Hughes in Rotherham, one of which may be offset by a death registration in 1868. There is also a birth registration in the first quarter of 1870. However the index on the GRO site indicates the mother's maiden name as "Robinson."
The 1871 Census records James as being 3 years of age which would indicate he was born in 1867 or 1868. Subsequent censuses indicate 1871 and 1873. Based on him being 3 years of age in the 1871 census which was taken on 2 Apr 1871 and on the existence of 2 birth registrations in 1867, I have used 1867 as the estimated birth year.
A search of Death Registration indexes for his father, John Hughes, reveals a death registration in the 3rd quarter of 1881 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England and gives an age of 44 which is consistent with the birth year for John in the 1871 census.
I am not able to find a death registration to support the 4 Apr 1925 death date for James. I have left it as "uncertain".
