James Hughes ... [1]

James Edward (Jimmie) Hughes lived in the Allice Mill community in Easley, South Carolina as a young boy. This is the same community that his Grandfather Lawrence Hughes and his Great Grandmother Sallie Hughes had lived. When he was around nine years old, his Father Glenn Hughes was killed while riding a motorcycle, after which his mother Willie Spearman moved into the house of her parents in the Glenwood Mill community, also in Easley, South Carolina.

As a young boy, he shined shoes to help support his family and later worked in the nearby Glenwood Mill. He graduated from Easley Hight School.

While riding with some friends, he met Peggy Jo Stewart from Liberty, South Carolina. She was riding in another automobile with friends and they met near Arial Mill between Easley and Pickens. After meeting, Jimmie's friend, Boyd Ellenburg, helped him arrange a date with Peggy and they continued seeing each other for six months. They were married then built a house near Eighteen Creek on Ruhamah Road. They lived there for about a year, then sold the house and moved to Easley near the Glenwood Mill.
