Biography

Summary

Joel Hughes was born on February 14, 1792, in Douglasville, Berks Co, Pennsylvania,[1] United States to Job Hughes and Eleanor Lee. At the time of his birth his father was 51 years of age and his mother was 48.

Details

He married Sarah Phillips on July 21, 1814, in Young, Ontario, Canada.[2]

Children of this marriage are:

  1. Mark Hughes (1815 – 1893)
  2. William Hughes (1817 – 1818)
  3. Ellis Hughes (1819 – 1904)
  4. Amy Hughes (1821 – 1882)
  5. Job Hughes (1823 – 1895)
  6. Ellen Hughes (1825 – 1896)
  7. Edith Hughes (1827 – 1907)
  8. Lydia Hughes (1829 – 1902)
  9. Isaac Hughes (1831 – 1832)
  10. Mary Hughes (1832 – 1902)
  11. Elizabeth Hughes (1834 – 1900)
  12. Samuel Hughes (1837 – 1838)
  13. Sarah D Hughes (1838 – 1907)

Joel Hughes is listed in the Census of 1861 (Canada West). His age is given as 69. His religion is noted as "Friends." He is identified as being married. There is a single mark in the Residents, Members of Family, Male column, with no additional marks for family or non-family members on that line. This might indicate that he was living alone at the time of the census; however, no other persons on this page have more than a single mark in the Residents collumns, and the line immediately following his is for Sarah Hughes, age 66, also a Friend, so I believe this to be his wife. The mark for type of house is unclear, but seems to indicate that Joel and Sarah lived in a frame house.[3] The following page of the census lists Mary Hughes, age 29, and Sarah Hughes, age 21, both identified as Friends.[4]

Joel Hughes is listed in the Census of 1871 (Canada West). His age is given as 79, and he is identified as widowed. His place of birth is noted as U.States, his religion Quaker, his origin English, and his occupation "Farmer & S Miller." He is listed with the following family members: Ellis Hughes, age 51, born in O. (Ontario), who is a married Quaker of English origin, who works as a farmer and S. Miller; Amelia Hughes, 45, a married Quaker of English origin; Saphronia, 26, a Quaker of English origin; Joel Grant Hughes, 23, a Quaker of English origin, who works as a Sawyer; Mary E. Hughes, 21, a Quaker of English origin; and Hattie Hughes, 13, a Quaker of English origin.[5]

He died on July 15, 1872, in Schomberg, York County, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 80.[6]

Ancestry provides a number of "Suggested Records" for Joel Hughes. Since, at this time, I do not have a subscription, following up on these suggestions will have to wait until I have time to visit the library. However, I am listing them here, just in case anyone is interested. Please feel free to share any relevant information from these records, should you have the time and interest, as well as access to the records. (Note: it's also possible that some of these records are available from other sites. I've often found that sites such as the Internet Archive have digitized copies of the records offered by genealogy sites, with one big difference: the documents are free.)

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Joel:
