According to legend, the first actress to ever appear on a theatrical stage in England (previously, female roles had been played by men). She debuted as Desdemona in Othello in 1660, at the Vere Street Theater, and soon became an acclaimed actress. In 1668, she met Prince Rupert, the king's dashing nephew, and lived with him until his death in 1682. They never married, but had one daughter named Ruperta.
The famous diarist Samuel Pepys, an avid theater-goer, reported going backstage and stealing a kiss from "Pegg", a mighty pretty woman, and seems, but is not, modest.
