Biography

Dr. Lloyd Alwin Hughes, 100, beloved by his family, died Sunday, January 3, 2016. Born in Mangum, Oklahoma, on February 6, 1915, the family came by covered wagon to homestead near Portales when he was age one.

Dr. Hughes is survived by daughters, Barbara and Carolyn, both of Cedar Crest; daughter-in-law, Lois, Albuquerque; granddaughters Robyn and husband, Rev. Jeffery McDonald, great grandsons Zachary and Joshua, Lakeland, FL, and Heather and husband, Kevin Schitoskey, great-grand-children Levi and Megan, Bend, OR. He is also survived by sister Ruth Cook and sister-in-law Beverly Hughes both of Albuquerque, and nieces and nephews. Karla, his puppy, held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by parents Walter M. and Effie Long Hughes, adored wife of almost 60 years, Esther Ruth Simms Hughes, beloved son, Robert A. Hughes, and siblings Gertrude, Leon, Walter, Johnny, Jack, Juanita, Lorine, and Bill.

Dr. Hughes began his United Methodist ministry in 1935 in Pritchett and Kim, CO, was ordained Elder in 1940, and retired to Cedar Crest in 1980. He completed university at the College of Mines (UTEP) El Paso. Dr. Hughes served in the New Mexico and West Texas Conferences, including District Superintendent of Carlsbad and of Big Spring, TX districts. He was also chaplain for prisoner of war camps near Anthony, Conference Missionary Secretary, helped establish the NM Conference ministerial pension plan, Chairman of Board of Trustees for building LandSun Homes, Carlsbad. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree in 1964 by McMurry College, Abilene, TX and Senior Archive Recognition in 2015 by NM Annual Conference. Dr. Hughes cherished his God, his family, his church and many special friends.

He, with his family, enjoyed hobbies, including music, fishing, lapidary, raising orchids, crafts, camping, needlework, and travel, particularly to Alaska.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, at First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead SW. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chancel Choir, First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1638, Albuquerque, NM 87103.
