Biography

John was born in 1859 in Indian Fork east of New Milton in Doddridge County, Virginia (present day West Virginia), the son of Sylvester Hughes and Delila Fitz Randolph. His father died when John was six years old, and John was brought by his mother and later his stepfather, James Richards. John stayed in the Doddridge County to farm. He married Armeda Nicholson in 1888 at Albert Carter (Albert Carter's house?) in Braxton County, WV. She joined him at Zinnia, WV and they had three children, one of whom died young, before she died in 1893. John remarried in 1895 to Victoria Adams at her father's house in Bearfork in Doddridge County. They had six children together, one of whom also died young. They later left the farm and moved to Salt Lick in Braxton County for a while and then returned to live near Salem at Wolf Summit in Harrison County. John died from flu in 1947, a day after his wife Victoria died. They are buried together in Coplin Church Cemetery in Salem, WV.
