Hazel was born in 1923. Her parents were Francis James Hughes (1891-1969) and Ruby Mary (Boyton) Hughes (1891-1934).
At the age of 11, her mother passed away, and her father sent her to board at St Joseph's Catholic School in Leeton.[1][2]
Around 1942, Hazel met Wilf while he was training with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in Wagga Wagga, and they got engaged in 1943.[3][4] They married at Wagga Wagga on 24 May 1945.[5]
After Wilf was discharged from the RAAF at the end of WWII, they settled in Scone and made regular visits to Hazel's father and brother (Jim Hughes) in the Riverina.[6]
Wilf found employment with the NSW Water Conservation & Irrigation Commission when Glenbawn Dam was being constructed. After that was completed, the family moved to Raymond Terrace (while Wilf worked on the Grahamstown Water Scheme), Keepit Dam (near Tamworth), Wyangala Dam (near Cowra), and then Copeton Dam (near Inverell). They stayed on after the construction of Copeton Dam was finished.
The children born to Hazel and Wilf were:
Hazel's father, Frank Hughes, died in December 1969 when she was 46 years old.
In the early 1980s, Wilf and Hazel retired to the NSW Central Coast, first living in Narara and then Wyoming.
In 1994 Hazel's older brother, Jim Hughes passed away at Narrandera.
Wilf passed at away in Gosford District Hospital in October 2001. This was just a few weeks short of his 80th birthday and Hazel was 78 years of age at the time.
On March 1, 2015, Hazel passed away at Gosford Hospital in Gosford, New South Wales.[8] She was 91 year old at the time. She was buried on March 6, 2015, at Palmdale Memorial Park Lawn Cemetery, where she shares a plot with Wilf, her husband of 51 years.[9].
