We regret to announce the death of Col. William Hughlett, of Talbot County, Md. He died at Easton, on Sunday last, in the 77th year of his age. The deceased for several years represented that county in the legislature, especially in the State Senate, where he discharged his duties with ability. A few months ago he accepted the office of State Collector for Talbot County, and was instrumental in giving a better tone to the public feeling there in relation to the payment of the arrears of State taxes. Talbot has lost one of her noblest and most patriotic citizens."[6]
Slaves
William owned seven people in 1820, fourteen people in 1830, and eighteen people in 1840. They were listed on the census by age and sex but not by name.
Slaves of William Hughlett, Maryland
After William's death, his wife Mary appeared in the 1850 and 1860 census slave schedules. It is possible that some of the slaves on his list and her list Slaves of Mary (Richards) Hughlett, Maryland are the same people.
Research Notes
There is an 1840 census record for a William R. Hughlett. However, the household has only two adults in their 20s and one young child, so it appears to belong to the son of this William Hughlett.
