Biography

Meshack Hull was under age 14 when his father's will was written on 1 Jan 1747/8 which implies that Meshack was born after 1733. [1]

In May 1749, Meshack was mentioned in his grandmother's will. Meshack was the son of Benjamin Hull and Rhoda Martin. His father Benjamin Hull was the son of Benjamin Hull and Sarah Drake (daughter of Rev. John Drake). Widowed Sarah Drake later married Israel Folsom and the widowed Sarah Folsom wrote her will on 2 May 1749. The will was proved 22 May 1749. In the will, Sarah left a bequest to several of her grandchildren including her Grand Son Mesheck Hull Son of Benjamin Hull.[2]

The marriage bond for the marriage of Masheck Hull and Elizabeth Dunn was signed by Masheck Hull and Elijah Dunham on 3 Mar 1764 (Middlesex County, New Jersey).[3]

On 2 May 1776, Meshack Hull purchased a tract of land in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey (from Thomas and John Martson), recorded 1811, Deed Book 18, page 521.[4]

Meshack Hull one of 6 elected and chosen trustees for the Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 21 Mar 1788, per the Hunterdon New Jersey Deed book 1, page 266, item titled: Corporation of the Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem

Whereas the Subscribers have been elected and chosen Trustees for the Society or Congregation who attend the Worship of God at the Church or Building erected many years past for that purpose in the Township of Bethlehem and in which the Reverend Mr. John Hanna hath long officiated as minister or Pastor, And we having severally taken the Oaths required by an act of the legislature of the State of New Jersey, passed at Trenton on the 16th day of March 1786 entitled "An Act to incorporate certain persons as Trustees in every religious Society or Congregation in this State for the transacting the temporal concerns thereof." We do therefore in pursuance of and in conformity unto the s(ai)d Law herby certify and declare, that we desire to be recorded and known in all our actings and doings, by the name of "The Trustees of the Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem in the County of Hunterdon" In Testimony whereof we have here-unto set our Hands and affixed our Seals the 21st day of March 1788. Signed by Chas Stewart, Jos. Sinclear, Wm. Maxwell, George Rea, Elias Wyckoffe, Mashak Hull[5]

John Opdycke and Meshack's son-in-law George D. Wells were given Letters of Administration for the estate of Meshack Hull on 18 Dec 1816 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Orphan Court Minutes (Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Feb 1817) state that his land descended to his children and grandchildren. Because his heirs included the minor children of his deceased children, the division could not be done "by argument". The Orphan Court Minutes of Hunterdon County, New Jersey in Feb 1825 identified his heirs: James Hull, Mary Wells and the children of deceased children Rachel Myers and Phineas Hull.

The Orphan Court Minutes of Hunterdon County, New Jersey identifes his children and some of his grandchildren. An petition for division of real estate of the estate of "Mashil Hull" deceased identifies the heirs of Meshack Hull:

Application being made to this Court by Charles Hull one of the heirs at law of Phenias Hull late of the County of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania dec’d and also attorney infact of Peter Hull, Isaac Hull, Mahlon Hull, James Hull, Sarah the wife of William Shipman and Mary the wife of Harmon Shipman who are also the children and heirs of Phineas Hull deceased all of the State of Pennsylvania Stating that Mashil Hull late of the County of Hunterdon deceased, died siezed of considerable real Estate Situate in the Township of Bethlehem and County of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey -- That he left issue four children viz Phineas Hull who is Since departed this life leaving issue above named, and James Hull, Mary the wife of George Wells and Rachael the wife of Philip Myers and that the said Rachael Myers hath since departed this life, leaving issue, all of whom are minors, and entitled to the share of said real estate which would be coming to their mother.[6]

The heirs sold this land; the deeds from the children of Phineas Hull, identified the relationship to Phineas Hull and to Meshack Hull in each deed. Although all seven of the children of Phineas Hull resided in Pennsylvania in Feb 1825 when they requested the division of property, six of the seven resided in Richland County, Ohio in 1835 when the property was sold.[7]
