Mrs. Lena Clarke Coon, 105, widow of the late James H. Coon of Milton, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 23 in the Dawson Nursing Home, Janesville, where she had resided for the past three years.
She was born Jan. 23, 1867 in Fulton Township, the daughter of Charles and Mary Green Hull. She lived at Albion and Utica where she began teaching at the age of 17 in county schools.
She received her education from Albion Academy and was graduated from Milton College in 1892, having the distinction of being the college's oldest living graduate.
In 1892 she was married to Perry L. Clarke, a college classmate, who was an early principal of the Milton School. Later they moved to Colorado where he taught for many years.
In 1949 she returned from Denver to marry James H. Coon, Milton.
After his death in 1956 she remained at the Coon residence on Rogers St. until 3 years ago.
All her life she has enjoyed good health, being active in her home and garden, civic and church life. She is a member of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church. Of special interest has been the restoration of the Albion Academy and progress and changes at Milton College who honored her on their double 100th anniversary.
