David Hull was born in July 1841 in New York to Jesse Hull and Rhoda Lillis.
In 1850, Jesse (56) and Roda (53) Hull resided in Washington County, Wisconsin with Jesse (23), Nelson (21), Danl (17), Milo (15) and David (9). (No place of birth was listed with anyone on that page of the census.)[1]
David W. Hull and Harriet Hannah Singleton were married 20 Mar 1859 in Marshall County, Indiana; the marriage license was dated 17 Mar 1859.[2]
In 1860, David W. (age 19, born in WI) and Harriet (age 24, born in IN) Hull resided in Marshall County, Indiana.[3]
David (29, born in NY) and Harriet (35, born in IN) Hull resided in Oakfield, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin in 1870 with children Elisabeth J. (9, born in IN), David Jr. (6, born in WI) and Sherman (4, born in WI).[4]
David (40, born in NY) and Harriet (42, born in IN) Hull resided in Center, Marshall County, Indiana in 1880 with children Elizabeth J. (18, born in IN), David V. (16, born in WI) and Sherman N. (13, born in WI).[5]
David (58, born Jul 1841 in NY) and Harriet H. (64, born Aug 1835 in IN) Hull resided in Argos, Marshall County, Indiana in 1900.[6]
Harriet Hull died in Mar 1910. In the 1910 census, widower David Hull (age 68) resided with daughter Lizzie and her husband William Beirderstadt in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana.[7]
David Hull served in the Civil War and was an army invalid. The United States Veterans Administration Pension Payment Card stated that he had an injury to his back and left knee. (The date of commencement was 20 Apr 1898 and the date of certificate was 10 Jun 1899.) The card stated that he died 14 Nov 1910.[8]
David Hull died 14 Nov 1910 in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana.[9]
David Hull was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. An old marker says: David Hull, Co. K., 3 Wis. Inf. A newer joint tombstone (with wrong year of death of both parents) says: Hull, David W. 1841-1911, Harriet H. His wife, 1835-1911, Erected by son & dau Sherman and Lizzie.[10]
This David Hull is not David Birney Hull and he did not marry Harriet Robinson. He is the father of Elizabeth, David and Sherman Hull and resided in Marshall County, Indiana in 1880.
Two different sets of David and Harriet Hull have been shown in family trees with children Elizabeth, David and Sherman. Both David Hulls were born about 1840-1842 in New York and served in the Civil War. Some family trees show David Hull and Harriet Robinson Hull residing with a Robinson family in Philadelphia in 1870 and then state that David and Harriet Hull resided in Indiana in 1880 with children Elizabeth, David and Sherman. But Elizabeth, David and Sherman resided in 1870 with parents David and Harriet Hull. So there were two families headed by a David Hull born in the same time frame whose wife was named Harriet.
No place of birth was listed for any of the family in the 1850 census. The 1860 census stated that David W. Hull was born in Wisconsin, but the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census stated that he was born in New York.
The 1880 and 1900 census stated that his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Vermont. The 1910 census stated that both parents were born in New York.
