Biography

Harold H. Hull was born on 24 August 1894 in the city of Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio. He was the second of three sons born to Walter Elverton Hull and Lenora Sarah Richmond. His brothers are Grover Gleason Hull and Dewey Donald Hull; his sisters are Dorothy Belle, Elverta Mildred and Tressa M Hull.

His name appears in the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. Federal Census reports, but with differing spellings of his first name, sometimes as Harvey and sometimes as Harold. He is with his parents and siblings in the first two census documents, and with his wife, Clela Hull, in the last Census documents. The 1920 census only listed marital status, so there is no indication as to how long they had been married at the time of the census.

Harold Hull wrote an autobiography several years before he died, telling the story of how he and Clela met. He writes that they met in high school and married for the first time in 1914, using fake names and addresses because they were underage at the time. Their first marriage took place at the Toledo Probate Court, Toledo County, Ohio, on 8 September 1914. He records that they were married by Pastor Phillip A. Kelser of the local Methodist Church. The ceremony was witnessed by his wife and housekeeper. Harold also writes that they saved their marriage license and certificate and that they were being held for safe-keeping by his mother.

I have been unable to find a copy of this paperwork nor any other indication that they were actually married. They were married a second time, 25 June 1917, because they were concerned that Harold would be sent off to WWI and they wanted protections for Clela.

Harold H. Hull officially married Clela Alcada Underwood on 25 June 1917. He was 22 and she was 20. After they were married, the census documents show that they lived in Ohio and Minnesota, before returning to settle down in Lorain County, Ohio. They retired to Largo, Florida before returning, again, to Ohio. They had three children: Phyllis Arlene Hull, Helen Louise Hull and Ronald William Hull. At the time of his death in 1990, he had 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He registered for the draft for World War I in 1918, but was honorably discharged for a physical disability. Harold trained as an accountant but did not work at that for long. The majority of his work life was spent working in the railroad industry as a conductor.

Harold Hull died on 29 June 1990 in Elyria, Ohio, after a short illness. He and Clela are both buried in a joint plot at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio. The date 1914 is inscribed on their joint headstone. They always considered themselves to have been married in 1914.
