Roger was born in Spicer in 1920, the second son of Fredolf Hultgren and Hattie Smith. While growing up, along with his brother John, he worked as a fishing guide at his family resort on Green Lake, MN. Roger graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, in 1942 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He lettered in Football, Golf, and Wrestling. After graduation, he had offers to play professional football with the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cardinals. Roger was 'conscripted' by Dupont for the war effort and sent to Kankakee Ill in 1942 from a recruitment program held at the Nicollet Hotel in Minneapolis. In 1944 sent to Washington state to work on The Manhatten Project at Hanford. Roger continued to work as Project Manager for numerous Hanford contractors, primarily involved with the B Plant/Reactor, where he was known by co-workers as 'Mr. B Plant.' After retirement Roger was very active in the Hanford History project, contributing hours of meetings and interview time to get the B Reactor museum groundwork laid. He passed away in 2009.
