Joseph Edwin Hume was born in 1875 in Durham, England to Robert Edwin Hume and Mary (Nicholson) Hume. His birth was registered in Durham in the second quarter of the year.[1]
In 1881 J E Hume (age 6) lived at Court Lane in Elvet, Durham with his father Robt E (30, Farrier), mother Mary (42), brother R A (1), half-brother F W Hayton (12), half-sister E H Hayton (10), and boarder Robert Richardson (33, Bricklayer).[2]
In 1891 Joseph E Hume (age 16, Watchmakers Apprenctice) lived at Court Lane in Elvet with his father Robert E (40, Farrier Smith), mother Mary (52), brother Richard A (11, School Boy), and half-brother Frederick W Hayton (22, Printer & Compositor).[3]
