OBITUARY.

MR S. S. HUME. It is with sincere regret that we have to announce the death of a well known and popular citizen Mr Stanley Stewart Hume of Palmerston. His death occurred so suddenly and was so totally unexpected that when the sad news was heard in town this morning it came as quite a shock to his many friends and acquaintances. On Saturday last while playing a rink at the Bowling Green, Mr Hume complained of feeling seedy and left shortly afterwards for home. Medical aid having been procured his case was found to be a serious one and an operation was performed on Sunday last, and another on Wednesday. Both, however, proved ineffectual, and he passed away yesterday morning. The late Mr Hume was the fifth son of Colonel A. Hume, Inspector of Prisons and, formerly, Commissioner of Police. He was 32 years of age and was born at Princetown, Dartmoor, England, where his father was Governor of the prisons. He was educated in Wellington and on leaving school entered the service of the Bank of Australasia, in whose employ he was when he first came to Palmerston some eight or nine years ago, retiring from there to enter the firm of H. Palmer and Co., the well known auctioneers. About two years ago he married Miss Ethel Knight, third daughter of Mr T. Knight a well known settler in the district, and the sympathy of all will be extended to Mrs Hume in her sad loss. Deceased was well known in athletic circles, being a keen sport, and his popularity socially was only equalled by the respect and esteem in which he was held in business circles. Mr Hume has always been an enthusiastic supporter of hockey in the district and he will be much missed as a referee next season. He was honorary auditor of the Manawatu Hockey Association for several years, and as a member of the committee of the Association, took a large part in the management thereof. Well known as a running man and a clever tennis player, he was also a frequent and successful competitor on the bowling green, having last year won the handicap singles, and being also the present holder of the Mowlem Cup. Mr Hume was hon. treasurer of the Palmerston North Working Men's Club, and during his residence in Wellington was a prominent member of the "Star Boating Club." The sad and sudden bereavement has, we regret to learn, quite prostrated Mrs Hume, and in consequence it has been decided to hold the funeral from the All Saints Church at noon to-day, the remains having been conveyed thither last night.
