Biography

John Humphrey was born about 1775.

John married Susanna Bradford on the 7th of January 1793 in Rowan county, North Carolina.[1]

John appears in the 1840 Federal census in Madison County, Georgia. John's household appears as follows: 1 male age 60 to 69; 1 female age 5 thru 9; 1 female age 40 thru 49; and 1 female age 60 thru 69.[2]

John made his last will and testament on the 21st of November 1840. John's will reads as follows: "In the name of God Amen I John Humphrey of the county of Madison and state of Georgia being in bad health but of sound mind and disposing memory but calling to mind the immortality of my body I constitute this to be my last will and testament that is to say first of all I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to be decently buried at the descretion of my friends as touching worldly Estate which has pleased God to bless me with I dispose of in the following manner (viz) 1st I will and bequeath unto my wife Susanna Humphrey and my Daughter Rebecca Humphrey all the property I may die in possession of household and kitchen furniture stock of all kinds farming utensils corn fodder oats &c. also my house and land whereon I now live land and everything to belong to them equally except one bed and furniture and bed stead I give to my grand Daughter Susie M. Humphrey but no division of the land or anything else during the time they both live but both mutually living together and enjoying with equal privileges until and or the other of their deaths and provided my wife Susanna should die before my Daughter Rebecca in that case my Daughter Rebecca shall be whole and sole heir of the land and all other property which I have wiled to them both jointly but in case my Daughter Rebecca should depart this life before my wife Susanna Humphrey then my land and all other property that my wife may die in possession of shall be equally divided among all of my children share and share alike. 2nd I will to my daughter Polly Whitaker all I have heretofore given her also the same to my son James Humphrey which have given him also the same to my son William Humphrey which I have given him also the same to my son Richard B. Humphrey also the same to my son John S. Humphrey which I have given him. Also the same to my son Simeon Humphrey which I have given him. 3rd I will that they Polly Whitaker, James Humphrey, William Humphrey, Richard B. Humphrey, John S. Humphrey, and Simeon Humphrey shall have no other part of my estate only what they have received except under circumstantial provisions I have made in this will. I ordain and appoint William H. Barnett my sole Executor to carry into effect this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this the twenty first day of November one thousand eight hundred and forty in the presents of [signed] John Humphrey

Hitchcock and Stephen Allen and after being duly sworn sayeth that they saw the said John Humphrey the Testator of said will sign seal & publish the foregoing Instrument of writing to be his last will and testament and that they believed the Testator was at the time of publishing the same of sound mind and memory and they they subscribed to the same as witnesses at the request of the Testator and that they saw Peyton H. Colbert do so likewise Sworn to and subscribed this 4th day of January 1841
