Biography

According to her death registration Jessie Humphreys was the daughter of Henry Thomas Humphreys and his wife Mary Gardner. She was born in Victoria, Australia about 1889. There is however a Jessie Humphreys born in 1883 to Henry Joseph Humphreys and Mary Gardner in Collingwood Victoria.^[1]

Jessie Humphreys married John Holt in 1906 ^[2]

Her brother’s death notice gives some family details. ^[3]

HUMPHREYS.— Killed in action in France on the 19th 'March, Private William Humphreys, eldest son of the late Henry Humphreys, of Collingwood ; brother of Mrs Isabella Fromer and Mrs. Jessie Holt and Edward. —Inserted by his loving sister and 'brother-in-law, R. and J. Fromer, and nieces, Florence and .Maud.

HUMPHREYS. — Killed in action in, France on the 19th .March, Private- William Humphreys, cKlest son of tho late Henry Humphreys, of Collingwood 'brother of Mrs. Jessie Holt and Mrs. Isabella Fromer and Edward. — inserted by his loving sister. Her Husband died in 1921 as a result of gassing in the trenches during WW1. HOLT.— In loving- memory of my dear husband, John Holt. who died at Caulfield Military Hospital 20th October. 1921. Ever remembered. — inserted by his loving wife Jessie Holt.^[4]

Jessie Holt died in South Melbourne in 1945. The registration says she was 56 years old ^[5]
