Biography

Charles (1816 – 1898) & Caroline (1828 – 1912) Humphries

Charles Humphris and Caroline Sampson were married at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England on the 7th February, 1846. They lived at Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire with their four eldest children, William, Mary, Sarah and Fanny until migration to Australia. On the 10th October 1852 the family sailed from England on the ship Ann Milne (destination Australia) as Assisted Migrants. They were not sponsored and came out of their own accord, arriving at Portland, Victoria on the 1st January, 1853. At the time of sailing William was 6 years, Mary 5, Sarah 4 and Fanny 1 year old. Charles was born on the 20th January 1853, nineteen days after Charles and Caroline arrived in Australia. The family made their first Australian home in Portland, and later lived at Marino, Sandford and finally Casterton. They had 15 children living.

Charles was born in England in 1816 and died at Digby, Australia in 1898.

Caroline (Nee Sampson) was born in England in 1828 and died at Digby, Australia in 1912.

Charles died at “Pleasant Hills”, Digby and is buried at Sandford along with Caroline and two daughters, Charlotte and Margaret.

It appears the original name in England had no ‘e’. Charles added the ‘e’ when he sailed for Australia. Charles was the only member of the family leaving England who could read and write.

(From my father's papers. He being Robert K. Salt, son of Clara Ley Salt nee Humphries)

Both are buried in the Sandford Cemetery.
