William (Humphry) Upcott was born in Middlesex, England.
William was born on 15 June 1779 and baptised on 20 June 1779 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, England.[1][2]
He was the natural son of Ozias Humphry and "Delly Wickens, the daughter of an Oxford shopkeeper, and was called Upcott after the maiden name of Humphry's mother".[3]
Occupation
He was a bookseller, librarian, bibliographer, editor, and autograph collector. He earned the nickname of "The Emperor of Autographs".[4]
Humphry's mother was most likely Elizabeth Hooper. The surname Upcott seems to have come from William's paternal grandmother (needs verification).
