John is said[1] to have been born about 1516, shortly after the marriage of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Down Ampney and his 1st wife Jane, daughter of Sir Edward Darrell of Littlecote, Wiltshire.
He was educated in law at the Inner. Temple, where he was admitted on 5 Feb 1534.
He succeeded his father in the entail of Down Ampney on 18 November 1558, after his father's death and was knighted in September 1574. He was thought to have been a MP for Great Bedwyn Oct .1553. He was sheriff of Wiltshire in 1576. [2]He died on 19 Mar 1582 and was succeeded by his heir Anthony who was at least 40 years old.
He married twice. Firstly he married, before 1541, Bridget, a daughter of John Fettiplace of East Shefford, Berkshire. She was his stepsister, the daughter of his father's second wife by a previous husband.[1][3]
He married, secondly, by contract dated 1 June 1563, Eleanor, a daughter of Walter Hungerford, Lord Hungerford of Heytesbury, Wiltshire and widow of William Master(s). [1][4]
From Hoare's Hungerfordiana:
Children of Bridget Fettiplace -
Sir John's will (dated 23 Elizabeth) mentions his son Anthony, son John, and (2nd) wife Eleanor (described as "my wyfe Elynor Maisters widdowe") and shortly afterwards is mentioned "Sir Walter Hungerford, knight, her brother"). Also noted are his son Anthony's father-in-law, William Shelley; Humphrey Smith, parson of Castell Eaton; father Sir Anthony Hungerford; sons-in-law Harry Bridges, Anthony Ingram, Humphrey FitzWilliams, and Richard Choke; and brother John Hungerford [the younger]. [5]
For Black Bourton:[6]
A London merchant, Simon Lowe, sold Black Bourton in 1557 to Sir Anthony Hungerford (d. 1559) of Down Ampney (Glos.); he bought a second Black Bourton manor the same year.
Both manors passed to Sir Anthony's son Sir John Hungerford (d. 1582), to John's 2nd wife and widow Dame Eleanor (d. 1591), and to their grandson Sir Anthony Hungerford (d. 1627), succeeded by his younger son Anthony (d. 1657). Under a settlement of 1652 the manors passed to the younger Anthony's son Col. Anthony Hungerford, who seems for a time to have held jointly with his elder brother Sir Edward (d. 1711), the manor house and farm being settled on their mother Rachel (d. 1680). He was succeeded in 1703 by his nephew Edward Hungerford (d. 1748), Sir Edward's son.
In 1737 Edward settled the manor on his heir Mary (d. 1775) and her husband Paul Elers (d. 1781), a lawyer. Elers, long in financial difficulty, sold all but the manor house and some 50 a. in 1768 to the duke of Marlborough, who bought other small parcels, and whose successor, in 1812, acquired the remaining land from Elers's grandson George (d. 1842).
Died Mar 19 1582. [7]
Buried Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire Unitary Authority, Wiltshire, England. [8]
