Born
Anna was born in 1896. Her mother was Mary Hunker (b. 1859). Her siblings were May (b. 1889) and Thomas J. (b. 1893). (1905 Wisc. census)
Name
Her middle name "Mae" is given in the Chicago RR employment record of her son LaVerne DeCorah.
Her surname "Hunker" is likely a corruption of Hųka, "Chief", from hųk, "chief, priest, leader"; and -ka, a definite article suffix used in personal names.
Her Hocąk name was WaConChoWinKah (1925 census), for Wakąjáwįga, "Thunderbird Woman," a personal name in the Thunderbird Clan. It's from Wakąjá, "Thunderbird"; -wį-, a feminine gender infix; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.
