Ernest Lewhenworth Hunkin was born on 7 Sep 1891 in Mevagissey, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, son of Samuel Hunkin (~1841 - 1907) and Emma (Rickard) Hunkin (1849 - 1908).
His siblings were:
Ernest married Brenda Emma Parsons (1884 - 1965). Their son was Raymond Hunkin (1917 - ).
Ernest served in the United Kingdom's Mercantile Marines during World War I. He attained the rank of 2nd Engineer and served on the SS Red Rose. Ernest was killed in action on May 22, 1918, at the age of 26. The SS Rose was travelling from Littlehampton to Le Havre carrying government stores when she was hit by U boat UB57 on 22nd May 1918.[1] She sank immediately. Ernest was awarded the British War Medal WW I and Mercantile Marine War Medal.
Ernest died on 22 May 1918 aged 26.
