Abel was born in 1812. He was the son of Josiah Hunt and Hester Smith.

He was a resident of New York City in 1835 and in 1860 as shown in state and federal census data. Some sources say he married Eleanor, last name unknown, about 1830.

He died about 1870 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
