When David Nelson Hunt was born in 1821 in Claiborne, Tennessee, his father, John, was 40 and his mother, Rhoda, was 32. He married Marinda Ann Beeman Hopkins on March 13, 1844 in Polk County, Missouri;[1] she died in 1853. He then married Cornelia Smith Beazley (1833-1883) on January 23, 1856 in Hinds County, Mississippi;[2] they had two children:

  • Sue Fidelia (1857–1956)
  • Cornelia Nettie (1858–)

He was crushed to death in a quarry mill[3] on October 12, 1859, in California at the age of 38, and was buried in Sacramento, California.[4]
