Biography

Ambrose has, incorrectly, often been shown born in Lenox, Massachusetts, the son of Benson and Rebecca (Richmond) Hunt. This error has been based on the SUGGESTION in SETTLERS OF THE BEEKMAN PATENT that such a relationship is possible. Frank Doherty has several question marks attached to this conjecture, but many have used it as fact. Ambrose has since been proven to be the son of Jeremiah and Mary (Vincent) Hunt.

It is to be noted that Ambrose and Sarah (Wiltsie) Hunt had a son, Cornel(l). The maiden name of Sarah Wiltsie's mother was COPNELL. In the land records cited in the sources for this page, Cornell Hunt is a principal, thus linking him to the family.

This writer has seen a family Bible, once in the possession of Jean (Schroeder) Gibson, late of Ontario, Canada, which recorded the descendants of Ambrose for two generations. I have been unable to connect with Jean's family since her death, to determine the disposition of that Bible. I transcribed what I believe was all the family information, but I'd like to see it again to be sure I did it all.

The photo attached to Ambrose (1764) is actually his grandson, Ambrose (1834-1904) son of John Elias Hunt.
