James took on his father's farm, Willow Creek, at Rongotea. He married Ailsa Brown, a nurse, in 1938. They had three children.
James was awarded the Companion of the Queen's Service Order for Community Service (QSO) in 1979.[1] This was in recognition for volunteer service in the Palmerston North community, especially in regard to Birthright, a New Zealand charity that has supported families led by one person since the 1960s.
James died in 1982 in Palmerston North. He was buried at Rongotea Cemetery, beside his parents' grave.
