Research Notes

  • Where did the name "Vere" come from? His marriage certificate is very clear - he was called "William John Hunt"......but....in all the birth certificates for all of his children, he is called either "Vere", "Vere J" or "Vere John". In addition, in his death certificate, he is called "Vere J Hunt". In addition, the transcription of his Baptism certificate shows his name as "John Vere Hunt". More investigation is needed. The ideal source would be his original birth record from England. It would also be useful to see his father's birth record.
  • Wikipedia may hold a clue - a search for the surname "De Vere Hunt" identifies that there an Irish Baronet called "De Vere Hunt" (1761-1818). In addition, over time the Baronet name "morphed" from "Vere Hunt" to "De Vere" over a period of 150 years. [6]
  • Is it possible that there is a direct link between William John (Vere) Hunt and the De Vere Baronets? Certainly, in his descendants, the names "De Vere", "Vere" and "Aubrey" appear on a number of occasions.

Hi Cathy - There is a very tenuous link via marriage - there are 23 steps between Hunt-21960 and Hunt-24388. I'll try to do some more research over the next few days.

kind regards...Nigel

Hi, I have the same question you do. How are the Hunt and de Vere names linked and where is the shared ancestor? My ancestor Marian Hunt [Hunt-24388] has given several of her descendants Vere as a second name. Our trees don't appear link yet but I think maybe they could be.
