Wilford was born in Swansea, Massachusetts in 1897 to William L. Hunt and Eliza E. (Pentalow) Hunt.^[1][2] His father was a farmer and carpenter.^[3] He served in World War I in France as a Private First Class in Company B of the 304th Battalion Tank Corp.^{[4][5][6][7][8][9]} After being discharged in 1919 he became a carpenter like his father.^[10][11]

He married Margaret Greenwood Kenney of Bristol, Rhode Island in 1923 and they would go on to have three daughters. For 33 years they were the caretakers of historic Martin House in Swansea.^[12]

They then moved to North Scituate, Rhode Island around 1968. Wilford died in 1978 at the age of 80. Margaret died in 1982 at the age of 87.^[13][14]
