DNA Evidence

Y-DNA 37 testing of two stems from Thomas Hunt has indicated that Thomas was most likely the illegitimate son of a male Hathway [Haplogroup R-M269]. A direct male line descendant of Harry Hathway of Tockenham, Wiltshire, has almost identical Y-DNA to descendants of two stems of Thomas Hunt, the database indicating that the ancestral surname was most likely Hathway.[7]

Y-DNA tests of other Hunt lines arising from further back in time at Tockenham have indicated a different Haplogroup (J2) to the two stems of Thomas Hunt and the Hathway line.

The Hathway family headed by Harry Hathway was from Gloucestershire and Somerset and first appeared in Tockenham, Wiltshire, in 1801. That Harry Hathway of Tockenham was the biological father of Thomas Hunt of Tockenham/Lyneham is uncertain.

James and Joanna Hunt

James Hunt and Joanna (Pittis) Hunt from West Tockenham in the parish of Lyneham, Wiltshire, were recorded as having children in the period 1797-1812. However, there is a gap in the baptism of their children between 1798 and 1805. It was initially supposed that as Thomas Hunt was born around 1802 in Tockenham/Lyneham then he may have been a son of James and Joanna. While the Y-DNA evidence suggests that Thomas Hunt was not the legitimate son of James Hunt it is possible that Thomas Hunt is linked with the family of James and Joanna.
