Biography

Eliza Victoria Hunt was born at Nicolet, Quebec, Canada, on November 12, 1840. In one census, she said her mother was born in Pennsylvania. She first married Dr. Josiah Weiser. He was an army surgeon and was killed in 1865 in the Indian wars in the Dakota territory. They had one child together:

1. Ada Weiser.

Eliza then married Rev. Alfred Houghton Stubbs (22 Aug 1841 - 2 Aug 1924) at Davenport, Iowa on April 25, 1867. They moved to New Jersey, where his father was an Episcopal priest in New Brunswick. Alfred was the priest for a local Episcopal congregation until there was an unknown problem with the marriage. Alfred then abandoned Eliza and their four or five children, to become a missionary in South Carolina. Eliza was left to support the family on her own - it is known that she ran a boarding house and wrote short stories. She probably did other odd jobs as well.

Their children were:

1. Eugenie Emilia Houghton Stubbs, born 02 Feb 1868 in Davenport, Iowa; died 23 Feb 1960 in Montclair, New Jersey. Married John Davies Ludlow on 20 Jun 1889 at New Rochelle, New York. He was born 06 Oct 1865 in Newlyn, Cornwall, England and died 31 Aug 1911 in Stillesville, New York.
2. Thomas Houghton Doane Stubbs born 19 Feb 1870 at Portlandville, New York. Married Mary Barbara Kane before 1894 in Brooklyn, New York.
3. Emilia Lillian Stubbs, born 12 Aug 1872 at Mechanicville, New York. Died there on 18 Jul 1873, before her first birthday.
4. Alfred Roland Stubbs, born 12 Aug 1872 at Mechanicville. Married _____ Young between 1900 and 1901 at Memphis, Tennessee.
5. Francis Osborne Stubbs, born 7 Nov 1873 at Mechanicville, and died the same day.
6. Carl De Runter Stubbs, born 7 May 1875 at Mechanicville, and died there at age 15 months, on 12 Aug 1876.
7. Mary Sawyer Stubbs born 24 Jul 1876 at Mechanicville, married William Beers Blackman on 22 Jan 1902 at East Orange, New Jersey.

Eliza died at Manhattan, New York, on January 25, 1897.
