Biography

William Wilderson Hunt was born December 14, 1836 to Hullum and Harriet C. Ward Hunt in Elbert County, Georgia. He had an older brother, James Richard Carter Hunt, and an older sister, Sarah Jemima Elizabeth, who was born in 1834. More siblings followed: Moses Asbury Pierce Hunt (1837), and Mandy Harriet Drucilla Hunt (1839). His mother, Harriet C. Ward died March 1, 1841.

Hullum and Harriet C. Ward were married March 8, 1832. They are reported to have the following children: 1. James Richard Carter Hunt, 2. Sarah Jemima Elizabeth Hunt, 3. William Wilderson Hunt, 4. Moses Asbury Pierce Hunt and 5. Mandy Harriet Drucilla Hunt .

Hullum married second, Harriet S. Farmer on March 10, 1842 in Elbert County, Georgia.<5> Their children were: John Robert Hunt (1843), Caswell Sion Hunt (1845), Benjamin Willis (1847), and Joseph Zachary Hunt (1848).

William [Hullum] (age 40) and Harriet Hunt (age 30) appear in the 1850 census in Floyd County, Georgia. Children and corresponding ages recorded include: Elizabeth (16), William Jr. (14), Moses A. P. (12), Manda (11), John R. (8), Caswell S. (6), and Zachary (2).<2>

In 1860, the family is farming in Polk County Georgia. At home with William [Hullum] (50) and Harriet (41) are: Moses (22), John R. (17), Sion (14), Benjamin (12), and Joseph Z. (10).<3>

In 1870, William [Hullum] (61) and Harriett (50) are at home (dwelling 1175) in Polk County, with Benjamin (23) and Zachariah (21). His adopted son, John (19) and John's wife, Permelia (19) Shifflett live with them. Living nearby (dwelling 1173) is Asbury Pierce Hunt (31) and his wife Mary (30) with their children Ella, Lavicy, and Stephen. Next door (dwelling 1174) is John R. Hunt (26), his wife Amanda [J. King] Hunt (26), their daughters *Ora (1), and Ida (2). At the next home (dwelling 1176) is Sion C. (24), his wife, Sarah (22), a son John B (2), and a black boy, Madison Brisco (8).<4> (*Katy Hunt and her sisters maintained correspondence with Ora into the mid 1900s. Ora became a stenographer who worked in Washington, D. C.)

John Robert and Amanda Jane King Hunt had a son, Joe Hunt, born May 29,1876. He died June 23, 1882. They also had a daughter, Amanda Hunt, born May 8, 1879. She died December 20, 1879, The children were buried near their parents in Friendship Cemetery, Cedartown, Georgia.

In the 1880 Polk County census, in dwelling 303, we find Benjamin (33) and Mattie Hunt (23), and the mother, Henrietta [Harriet] (58). The son of Hullum and Harriet appears in the Polk County record. At dwelling 214, William (44) and Sarah (41) Hunt live with Hollum (23), Pierce (17), Joseph 14, James (11), Emma J (8), Ida (6), and Walter (1). Next door is William [Malon] (26) and Mandy [Amanda Lettie Dooley Hunt] (27) Hunt with their children Eddie [Joseph Eddy] (7), Charlie (5) and Lizzie (10 months). Sion Hunt and his family, Sarah B (32), John B. (11), David (9), Amos (7), Nancy (4), and not named (11 months) live in dwelling 75.

William Wilderson Hunt died May 31, 1912. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedartown, Polk County, Georgia, USA.<5><6>
