Global Cemeteries Project

Sarah was born in 1832. She was the daughter of James Hunter and Sarah Akins. [1]

She came with her family from New York to Guilford, Illinois in 1844.

She lived with her sister Mary in Missouri and taught school. She then went abroad and studied medicine.

She was one of a few women doctors in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1886 Dr. Sarah Hunter’s nomination for membership in the St. Louis Medical Society was soundly rejected. According to the press, “It was admitted on all sides that no objection could be made to Dr. Hunter’s qualifications, but the edict had gone forth that no more ladies would be admitted to membership, and the society will enforce it.” [2]

Sarah passed away in 1894. [3]

Obituary

Death of Dr. Sarah Hunter

Dr. Sarah Hunter, 62 years old, died in her home of cancer. She practiced medicine for seven years in this city, up to a few years ago, when she took sick. It is said she advocated the practical application of the theory that total abstinence might affect a cure of certain diseases, including her own ailment. She was supposed to this theory on herself for several months ago, but the attending physician pronounced that she died of cancer. [4]
