David was born in 1837 in New York. He was the son of James Hunter and Sarah Akins. ^[1]

He came to Guilford with the family in 1844.

He married Sarah Gonsolus in 1872 ^[2]

He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1884, serving 4 terms. In 1892 he was elected to the State Senate. ^[6]
