The Runner, while on a patrol off the Kuril Islands in northern Japan was declared Missing and was last heard from by U.S. Naval forces on May 27, 1943.

After the war Japanese captured records indicated that the Runner sank the cargo ship Seinan Maru on June 11, 1943 in Tsugaru Strait off Hokkaidō, Japan. On June 22, 1943 the Runner was attacked and apparently damaged by IJN naval forces.
